Sample Types Explained: Prototype vs Fit vs Sales vs Pre-Production

Sampling is where your collection starts to feel real and where many designers get confused around which clothing sample types and which sample types they need at each stage. Approving the wrong sample (or skipping a key step) often leads to extra rounds, avoidable costs, and issues that show up later in production.

This guide breaks down the four types of clothing samples that matter most and explains exactly when to use each. You’ll get a simple decision flow, the approval gate for every stage, and what to prepare before contacting a sample maker, and how to avoid common missteps. 

The Sample Sequence Most Designers Should Follow

Sampling works best as a progression: validate the concept, lock fit, prepare a sell-ready version, then confirm the production-ready standard before moving to the bulk production. In most cases the sequence typically moves from prototype → fit → sales → pre-production (PPS). Next, we’ll break down each sample type in detail: what it’s for, when to use it, what approval needs to be done at each stage, and what should be updated before moving forward.

Prototype Sample

A prototype sample is the first step that turns an idea into something you can evaluate in real life. You may also hear this stage called a muslin, mock-up, or toile, depending on the team. Its purpose is simple: confirm the design direction before you invest in perfecting fit or final finishes. At this stage, you’re checking silhouette, proportions, and whether the construction approach is realistic.

When to use a prototype sample

Use a prototype when you are:

  • Developing a new style for the first time
  • Testing a new silhouette, detail, or construction concept
  • Not sure a design idea will translate well off the sketch

Approval gate:

A prototype is approved when the overall shape and design direction feel right, the construction plan makes sense and you know what needs to change.

Inputs: what to provide

    • Sketches or reference images
    • Notes on key details (closures, trims, finishing)
    • Rough measurements or a reference garment (if available)
  • Fabric guidance (even if you use substitutes, match stretch/drape needs)

Outputs: what you should get back

    • Clear notes on changes for the next round
    • Early pattern direction (first draft to revise)
    • Construction decisions (simplify, reinforce, adjust details)
  • A plan for the next step —  fit sample (what to measure and refine)

With the design direction confirmed, the next step is to refine the pattern through fit, so you can establish a clear baseline before moving toward presentation or production.

Fit Sample and Size Sets

A fit sample is the stage where your design is evaluated through fit: balance, ease, comfort, and silhouette on the body. Its purpose is to refine the pattern until the garment fits as intended across key measurements. This is also where you establish the fit standards that will carry through the rest of development and into production.

When to use a fit sample

Use a fit sample when:

  • The overall design direction is confirmed and you are ready to fine-tune fit
  • You need to validate points of measure, ease, and how the garment sits on the body
  • Function matters (mobility, support, coverage, or a specific fit “feel”)

Fit sample vs size set

A fit sample is typically made in one base size to refine the pattern and confirm the intended fit. If you plan to produce multiple sizes, a size set is used to confirm grading consistency across the range. This helps identify issues such as disproportionate grading, inconsistent ease, or fit problems that only appear in certain sizes.

Approval gate

Fit can be considered approved when key measurements align with your targets (within defined tolerances), balance and proportion are correct (lengths, rise, neckline, sleeve placement, etc.), movement and comfort meet your standards and the pattern & specifications have been updated to reflect every final decision.

A clean “fit approved” outcome means you can move forward without re-litigating fit later during sales sampling or pre-production.

Common fit-sample mistakes

The most common issue is unclear fit priorities. If you don’t define what must be precise versus where ease is acceptable, revisions become subjective and drag on. 

The second issue is failing to update specs after each decision when the pattern changes but the documentation doesn’t, the next sample round (or the production team) ends up working from conflicting instructions.

Once fit is approved and documentation is up to date, you reduce the risk of avoidable surprises later in the process. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent production mismatches.

Sales Sample

A sales sample is the version of your product that represents what you intend to sell. Sales samples are most commonly used for wholesale appointments, buyer review, and showroom presentations. It is developed once the design direction and fit are stable, and its purpose is to present the garment in a market-ready way, so buyers and partners can evaluate it with confidence.

Sales sample vs photo/editorial sample

A sales sample is built to be sell-ready. Whereas photo or editorial samples may prioritize styling, visuals, or one-off presentation, and they sometimes include temporary solutions that don’t translate cleanly into production. A sales sample, by contrast, should be aligned with your intended materials and construction, because it often influences decisions about orders, timelines, and confidence in execution.

What must be finalized before you use it

Before you rely on a sales sample, key elements should be confirmed:

  • Materials and trims: correct fabric, key hardware, and intended details
  • Finishing standards: seams, hems, closures, and overall workmanship reflect your brand
  • Branding basics: labels, hangtags, packaging direction, and size information where applicable

If these elements are still changing, you risk presenting a version of the product that won’t match what you ultimately deliver.

After your sales sample represents the product you intend to bring to market, the final step is confirming that the same standard can be executed consistently in bulk.

Pre-Production Sample (PPS)

A pre-production sample (PPS),  sometimes called a sew-by, is the final confirmation step before bulk manufacturing. Its purpose is to validate the complete “production recipe” so the garment can be executed consistently at scale.

PPS typically confirms the final materials and trims, the construction and finishing standards, and the key details that must stay consistent across the run. It’s approved when the sample matches the final specs and represents the standard you expect in bulk.

Inputs / outputs:

  • You provide: final BOM/trims, final specs/tech pack (with points of measure/tolerances), approved fit baseline, finishing expectations.
  • You receive: a PPS that matches the final standard, plus production notes and critical-to-quality callouts for the bulk run.

After PPS is approved, there is one additional checkpoint that takes place on the production line — TOP— which serves a different purpose and should not be treated as the same approval. At this stage, an experienced apparel sample maker will also document the critical-to-quality points that production must repeat consistently.

Where TOP Fits (and Why It’s Different From PPS)

A PPS is approved before bulk production begins. It confirms the final standard for materials, construction, finishing, and specs, so the production team has a clear reference to follow. A TOP (Top of Production) happens during production and is taken from the line to confirm the bulk run is matching that approved standard under real production conditions.

TOP serves as an early verification point before the run continues at full speed. It helps catch issues while adjustments are still straightforward, such as measurement consistency, trim placement, stitch execution, and how bulk materials perform in production. Once TOP is approved, the team can proceed with confidence that the rest of the run will meet the same standard.
